homemade Grenadine Recipe (Pomegranate Syrup)

Delicious and easy homemade grenadine syrup recipe made from pomegranate juice, sugar and lemon juice. As simple as that. Just three ingredients and 30 minutes of cooking. Ideal for topping desserts (rice with milk, panna cotta, cheese cakes, pancakes), but also in salads and dishes (beef stews, steaks) , it’s perfect addition in both sweet and salty meals.

I say “homemade” grenadine syrup, because the commercial grenadine syrup no longer has anything to do with pomegranate or the 100% pomegranate juice claimed on the ingredients. It is rather composed of mixture of red fruit juices in small quantities (about 10%) and artifixial flavoring and aromas(as almost any other food in stores nowadays). It does not contain pomegranate, except in the name.

Not long ago I gave you the recipe for pomegranate molasses. A very popular condiment in the Middle East. Today I will show you how to prepare homemade grenadine syrup.

Today I bought 3 large bags of pomegranates specially for making pomegranate juice.

Needless to say, I had a hard time(not fun) extracting the seeds from each pomegranate. It takes a lot of time! I did it while watching TV, fortunately ;-).

Then you need to pass the seeds trough the blender or mixer and finally strain the juice. It’s that easy.

But, I will tell you right away that you don’t have to make your own pomegranate juice, you can use ready made juice bought from the store🙂, if you can find any.

Part of the pomegranate juice has already served me to prepare pomegranate molasses before, and I used the rest to make this syrup and also pomegranate jelly (I’ll give you the recipe soon).

Grenadine syrup is very simple to make: you take pomegranate juice, add half its weight in sugar and a trickle of lemon juice (2 tablespoons of lemon juice for 1/2 liter of pomegranate juice and 250 g of sugar – the weight of sugar is half the weight of pomegranate juice). You can optionally add an aroma of your choice (cinnamon stick, star anise, orange blossom water). You then cook gently on low heat until a syrup consistency is obtained.

The grenadine syrup is different from pomegranate molasses, though. It is a syrup, and thus it contains more sugar.

With the syrup you can make also wonderful pomegranate drinks and cocktails like this one:

How to use your homemade grenadine(pomegranate syrup):

In addition to making delicious and healthy drinks with the grenadine syrup (by just adding water and ice cubes), it can also be used in the same way as pomegranate molasses. It’s beautiful for topping desserts and cakes of all kinds: like panna cotta (as we do with a fruit broth, rice with milk, mhalbi(arabic milk pudding)… not to mention cheesecakes, ice cream and sorbets, pancakes and pancakes, a rolled cake or a Christmas log cake…

But it’s also great in sweet and savory salads, to accompany meats…

The end of the Year holidays are approaching at a fast pace. Give freedom to your imagination! The beautiful dark red color of pomegranate syrup gives you a nice, chic and beautiful effect in your recipes.

You can use a commercial pomegranate juice or make your own juice by squeezing fresh pomegranates in the right season.

I personally make a lot of pomegranate juice that I freeze to drink it as is or to make this syrup, molasses or pomegranate jelly. It is very convenient!

Easy Homemade Grenadine Syrup Recipe

Ingredients

Pomegranate syrup:

  • 500 ml | 2 cups pomegranate juice (commercial or made from fresh pomegranates)
  • 250 g / 1¼ cups white sugar (or a little less if you want less sugar)
  • 30 ml | 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Spices

  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

Preparation

  • Pour pomegranate juice, sugar and lemon juice into a saucepan with a thick bottom.
  • Optionally, add your cinnamon stick if you use it (I don’t). Mix everything.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Once it boils, lower the heat and cook over low heat, without covering the pan, until a syrup consistency is obtained.
  • The syrup should not be too thick as it will thicken further as it cools. Cooking will take about 30-40 minutes.
  • When your mixture starts to coat the spoon, it’s ready.
  • At the end of cooking, remove your cinnamon stick if you used it.
  • Pour into an airtight jar. You will have about 1 cup / 250 ml of pomegranate syrup.
  • Close your jar and keep it in the refrigerator.

Enjoy!

Notes on the recipe

1. How to make homemade pomegranate juice ?

It takes about 8 medium grenades to have 500 ml of pomegranate juice.

If you want to make your own pomegranate juice using fresh pomegranates, wear an apron ! Spots of pomegranate juice are tenacious.

A. Method 1 (what I do): first extract the seeds from each pomegranate (cut two slices, one from the top and one from the bottom of the pomegranate. Just enough to remove the thickness of the skin and see the first seeds.

Make 4 vertical incisions (in the hollows), to be able to separate the grenade into quarters. Then remove the seeds.
Put your seeds in a blender or mixer, mix. Then filter the juice using a very fine strainer (to remove the mixed seeds).

B. Method 2 :

Cut your pomegranate in half and squeeze its juice into a juicer.

2. To flavor your pomegranate syrup:

In addition to cinnamon (stick), also think about other flavors according to your taste. For example, star anise, citrus peel, or orange blossom water or pure vanilla extract(in the latter two cases, to be added towards the end of cooking).

Absolutely delicious on strawberries and vanilla yogurt! I add 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 star anise and 4 cloves that I remove at the end of cooking. A classic at lunch for the holidays at home!
