If you and your children enjoy any kind of sports or sporting events, there is certainly a time when water alone can no longer quench your thirst. So, try this recipe for a homemade electrolyte drink with baking soda and your family will love it!

Before you stop at the store to take a Gatorade at your next sporting event, try to make your own natural version ! It is easy, quick to prepare and much more healthy.

Ordinary Gatorade drinks contain water, sucrose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, a natural grape aroma, other natural flavorings, salt, sodium citrate, potassium phosphate mono, as well as Red # 40 and Blue # 1 dyes. (Recorded on the label of a grape flavoured Gatorade drink).

While rehydrating is important for your health, you may wonder if potassium phosphate, mysterious “natural flavors” and other artificial dyes are really necessary?

So, for activities where water is no longer sufficient to rehydrate you properly (softball, triathlons, physical work, etc.), you can make your own drink that will be completely natural… unlike Gatorade and Powerade.

  • 1 litre of any liquid you prefer (choice : green tea, infusions, coconut juice, water, etc.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan or sea salt from (or ordinary table salt but it does not have all the trace elements)
  • ¼ To ½ crushed or powdered calcium and magnesium tablets (optional))
  • ¼ Glass or more of juice (choice : grape, apple, lemon, lime, pineapple, etc.))
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of sweetener (optional): we can use honey, stevia, etc.I suggest you infuse the stevia leaves in the base liquid for a more natural result.

Preparation of homemade electrolyte drink with baking soda

  1. Infuse the tea if you use it or heat the base liquid slightly.
  2. Add salt and crushed magnesium-calcium (if applicable))
  3. Add the juice, mix or shake with a shaker
  4. Let it cool and keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve.


Here is an even easier solution with the following recipe.

Easy homemade rehydration electrolyte drink with baking soda

  • 1 big glass of lemon juice or limes juice (about 6 to 8 lemons)
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda


  1. Place in an airtight jar and mix (lemon juice and baking soda will react, so gently shake without stirring too much), keep covered in the refrigerator.

This preparation is suitable for 1 liter of filtered water or simply add 1 to 2 tablespoons per glass of water.
