Liquid electrolytes are aqueous electrolytes in which ions come from a soluble salt and molten salts that consist only of ions. Solid electrolytes are crystals in which some ions are mobile or polymers such as those used in ion exchange membranes.

For example: table salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) that dissociates or turns into ions, when dissolved in water. A non-electrolyte substance does not conduct electric current when dissolved in water.

While sugar (like glucose) does not dissociate into ions when dissolved in water. A current is thus generated when a charge is in motion. Traditionally, electricity is generated by the movement of electrons. The same principle applies here, but instead of having electrons in motion, it is the ions of a solution.

An electrolyte solution is an ion-containing solution. It conducts current and is electrically neutral.

An aqueous electrolyte solution is obtained by dissolving a substance called a solute in water; an organic electrolyte solution is a conductive solution that contains carbonaceous molecules and different minerals.
