How to Make Apple Chips at Home

I love apple chips! I’ll just be sitting here, typing, and I’ll be thinking of a great snack to munch on while doing work… And apple chips come to mind. The crunch, the subtle sweetness… So good!

…But what isn’t so nice is the price. A half ounces runs me at $2.49 at Ralphs and that’s super crazy for a bag of apple chips! So I decided to make my own.

Because of this, if you’re like me and looking for a treat that you don’t really have to monitor, try out these dried apple chips! All you need is a few kitchen equipment items, apples, lemons, cinnamon and sugar. and patience!

If you’re asking what the lemon is for, it’s so that while you are cutting and prepping the apples, the ones that are already done don’t turn brown! It just makes for a nicer finish if you bake them with nothing sprinkled on (I put cinnamon and sugar on my apples, so I didn’t really need to put them in lemon water, but whatever) but it does make the apples moist, which is what we’re trying to avoid. It’s up to you if you want to put lemon!

Ingredients
  • 1 medium or 2 small apples, preferably fuji or honey crisp (If you want sour, granny smith is good)
  • 1 lemon (optional)
  • Sprinklings (i.e. cinnamon sugar) optional
  • Parchment paper
  • Paper towels
  • Baking sheets
  • Mandoline or knife
  • Oven
  • And some Patience 😉
Instructions
  1. Wash apples. Put parchment paper on baking sheets.
  2. Preheat oven to 250F.
  3. If using lemon, grab a large bowl and squeeze lemon juice out. Fill bowl halfway with water and set aside.
  4. Using a mandoline or knife, slice apples thinly, but not paper thin. Set aside as you continue to work, putting them in lemon water if you prepared.
  5. Once done, pat the apples dry (even if you didn’t put lemon water) and place on prepared baking sheets.
  6. Sprinkle spices (i.e. cinnamon sugar), if desired.
  7. Put in oven for 2 hours, rotating tray after 1 hour. As the apples shrink, you can move them closer to each other and condense pans.
  8. After 2 hours, take out and let sit for 10 minutes, or until cool. As they sit, they will crisp up more.
  9. Enjoy!
