If you wonder how to make Starbucks Matcha Latte, then below you will find the perfect guide on making one.
Matcha (抹茶) is a green tea that is reduced to very fine powder, traditionally used in the tea ceremony in Japan. It can also be used as an aroma in the preparation of milk drinks, cakes, soba noodles, etc., which it also colours with a more or less vivid green depending on the dosage and cooking.
Matcha is very rich in antioxidants and is now readily available pretty much everywhere, however I recommend to choose if possible a matcha with organic quality.
I knew the “Green Tea Latte” in the cafés of the American chain Starbucks when I lived in Beijing. Not drinking coffee at all, my choice was then very limited, I had the good surprise to discover this original drink. With the addition of milk, I absolutely do not consider the Matcha Latte as an authentic tea, but I was happy to order this drink every time I visited Starbucks. Although this latte seemed healthy to me (green tea + soy milk), I learned later that the ingredients were not as healthy and natural as I thought. The matcha powder used contains flavorings and sugar and the syrup used in the composition contains preservatives and other additives.
From now on, I make my own cup of Matcha Latte at home, it’s as fast but much healthier! And besides, I can enjoy it quietly and peacefully, without having to breathe the smell of nearby coffee !
This latte is tasted as is or with a good layer of thick foam on the top. I use my Judge milk emulsifier, which makes delicious, creamy foams in seconds. I recommend to prepare the foam with soy milk for a thick result, the other vegetable milk does not coagulate as well.
For me, the best time to enjoy a matcha latte is in the morning or afternoon after lunch when my mind and body need a little more space to relax, regroup and focus on work and productivity. The whole process of making matcha tea is very therapeutic, I respect and understand with all my heart the ritual and ceremonies surrounding this tea.
If you are one of those millions of people who love latte, or you are a green tea enthusiast, then you have to try the matcha latte! Many replace their good old afternoon Starbucks latte with this much healthier version that leaves a feeling of freshness, gives a lasting energy gain and especially without this unwanted effect “the big push” of late afternoon that is often associated with coffee. Are you ready to start? So let’s go over the ingredients.

What matcha tea to use for your latte.
I will always advise you to leave on matcha tea of culinary grade for your latte. Choose a premium powder. This way you will keep all the benefits associated with matcha tea.
The matcha tea, which I recall, is very rich in antioxidants, amino acids and chlorophyll, responsible for its beautiful bright green color. Among the amino acids contained in matcha tea, L-theanine is the most widespread and is known to have a relaxing effect on the mind and body, hence the habit for monks to sip matcha tea to facilitate meditation.
In addition, the subtle caffeine content helps with concentration, which could be because theanine increases serotonin, dopamine, and glycine levels in the brain.
What milk to use?
And yes! As this is a latte, each latte must contain milk, but when you make matcha latte, you must use plant based milk. Let me explain. Matcha green tea and animal milk do not go well together, as milk can interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from green tea. One of the best alternative is coconut milk or almond milk.
Coconut milk and almond milk are both loaded with healthy fats. Fats are good for your health! They help our body absorb key nutrients, taste delicious, and play an essential role in producing hormones and maintaining the health of our cells.
What you will need to prepare your Starbucks matcha latte
For me, foam is a must to enjoy any type of latte, and it is best to do it with a milk foam. To create the foam, you can also use a bamboo whip as most of us have done, and both give a nice result! Here is a list of my favorite tools to use when making a matcha latte. An additional advantage is that they are affordable! More on the ingredients here.
- Milk frother
- Little bamboo whip
- Small mixing bowl
- High quality matcha tea powder
- Organic coconut or almond milk
- Honey, maple syrup or stevia to soften optional
Don’t you have the right utensils?
No problem, you can always make a matcha latte!
Instead of the step using a bamboo whisk, just add a small amount of hot water into a cup with the matcha tea and use the back of a spoon to stir and make a smooth green paste. Finish by adding the remaining hot water and coconut milk. Sweeten with stevia, honey or maple syrup (optional).
The second option is to use a blender):
Just add all the ingredients to the blender and mix for about 1 minute. He’s getting beautifully sparkling!
