homemade lemon garlic ginger drink

Here is an easy lemon garlic ginger drink recipe for a revitalizing juice that was given to me by one of my close friends. It is not necessarily a drink to enjoy, it doesn’t have a great taste either, but on the other hand by taking two tablespoons two hours before meals it helps the body to regain its natural healing forces, and also to defend itself from the cold of the winter, to cleanse and detox itself.

So, what’s this drink all about?

The synergy of these very simple ingredients is magnificent when combined and together they are far more effective than taken separately. The recipe is simple and has been used for centuries, especially in Germany and Western Europe. I know it’s a blog that I usually share yummy recipes, but now I wanted to share with you some healthy natural remedy to help strengthen and heal your body!

A drink made with ginger, lemon and honey sounds good! But what if you add garlic, it becomes another story… Actually, it’s the synergistic combination of these natural ingredients that I am going to talk about. If you’ve read my articles on garlic and ginger, you should know that they’re both valuable allies in improving the immune system and detoxifying your body.

So, given the health benefits you get by using such an easy and cheap drink, you really should include this homemade ginger lemon juice and garlic miracle in your diet.

As for honey, it is known for its wonderful sweet taste but also for its healing, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

This easy healthy drink will allow you to stay healthy if it is taken as a natural preventative measure or as a remedy to get you back in shape in case of illness.

Lemon Garlic Ginger Drink Benefits

So, what are the benefits?

The main beneficial actions of the combination of garlic, ginger, lemon and honey are the following:

Antibacterial:

The combined action of garlic, ginger and honey will make it possible for your body to fight effectively against various viruses and bacteria we are exposed in our everyday life. And by strengthening your immunity it might even help you overcome or avoid getting flu, cold or other illnesses related to compromised or weak immunity.

Vasodilator:

The ginger has a vasodilator action that will warm the body. Convenient when cold and bedridden.

It will have other effects thanks to its components, but now I just want to inform you about the immunostimulant side of this drink. I invite you to read my articles on garlic and ginger for more details or check out my other similar drinks.

Contraindications:

Since ginger is a vasodilator and garlic is a blood thinner as noted here, I suggest against drinking it before an operation (surgical or dental) or when taking anticoagulant drugs.

How to Make Lemon Garlic Ginger Honey Drink at Home

Method

Step 1

It’s important to carefully wash the organic lemons in order to avoid pesticides! If you’re lucky enough to have your own lemons from your garden, it’s even better! Then cut them into small pieces by removing the seeds.

Step 2

Add the small lemon slices with the entire skin in the blender. Note: You can peel the lemon if you want, but normally it’s recommended that you use the lemon with its entire skin as it has been found that lemon peel and most other citrus fruits skin have more than twice the amount of nutrients and vitamins compared to the fruit’s pulp.

Step 3

Peel 4 cloves of garlic and put them also in the blender. There’s no need to grate them or cut them into pieces. The blender will take care of them.

Step 4

Peel the fresh ginger and cut it into small pieces then add them in the blender. Add about half a liter of mineral water or spring water and blend until you have a smooth, lumpless and totally homogeneous liquid mixture.

Step 5

Pour the mixture into a large pot or jar and add 1.5 liter of mineral or filtered water. Cook over low heat, for 15-20 minutes or until it thickens a bit, stirring constantly. Once the preparation takes a syrupy texture cut the heat, let it cool completely, filter with a colander and pour in a bottle with a funnel. Then leave the bottles in the fridge. Better use glass bottles.

Note: If you add the honey when you cook this drink, the honey will lose its beneficial qualities. So, make sure to add it after you finish brewing the drink when it has been completely cooled down.

When to Drink it?

Some people think it is better to take it on an empty stomach in the morning. Then the assimilation by the body is probably the best, but we know all the effects of garlic on social life, right… The evening before going to sleep seems to be a more proper choice :-).

To consume it, it is necessary to drink the hot preparation before going to bed and put a hot water bottle at the level of the liver. The hot ginger drink and the hot water bottle will allow the body to perspire(sweat), which will also contribute to the elimination of the bacteria and toxins in your body causing the disease.

Also, you can drink this juice without boiling and use the ginger, garlic and lemon juice raw. But for me and for people with sensitive stomach, I recommend that the mixture gets a little heat treating by boiling it for at least 10 to 20 minutes at medium heat.

If you love ginger and lemon (and who doesn’t really) then you may also like my ginger lemonade recipe too 😉

  • Bonjour, j’ai toujours fait cette recette, par contre je ne savais pas qu’il fallait mettre le citron avec toute la peau.
J’utilisais la pulpe en entier sans la peau.
    Merci pour votre engagement

Hello, I always made this recipe, however I did not know that you have to put the lemon with all the skin.
I used the whole pulp without the skin.
    Thank you for your commitment

    • Hi, thanks for the nice words. By adding the lemon slices with the skin, you are ensuring you’ll get more nutritional benefits from the lemon(you may not know, but the skin of the lemon and oranges has several times more nutrients and vitamins than the fruit’s inner pulp). But it’s up to you whether to use the entire lemon with unpeeled skin or without the skin, it will still be pretty delicious and healthy, you will just get less benefits without the skin.

      • Hi Jennifer, I refrigerate the lemon, garlic, ginger drink, I want to drink it in the mornings as medicine,,is it best to warm 2 tbsp bfore drinking. My conditions r diabetis, guitoir, and mild pressure sometimes. Thanks for ur kind reply. I’ll

        • Hey Joan,

you can drink it warm if you prefer, just don’t make it boiling hot. Since you have health issues, this drink may or may not help you, so please consult your doctor before using any natural remedies.

          • Yes, you can add whichever other spices or fruits you like. With turmeric the drink will become even more healthy. But keep in mind that some spices and herbs can be irritating for your stomach, so make sure you are not allergic or with other health issues.

I’m not sure the taste would be great with turmeric, but you can make it more palatable by adding some honey yo the mixture.

      • Well, depending on the severity of your situation just using this drink won’t probably help you much. I also suffered a few sleepless episodes in the past, so I can suggest you should avoid stimulating drinks and foods at night. If you drink coffee, use it early in the day. Avoid too much stress. Unfortunately there’s abundance of stress in our lives nowadays. The reasons for your sleepiness could be many and before you get your sleep back to normal it may take some time and some adjustments to your lifestyle.

Stop watching news(if they bother you and lately they certainly do annoy me a lot) and if you want to be informed, just stick with reading news online.

Change your environment(if possible) or avoid situations and meeting with people that frustrate you.
Avoid spicy foods in the evening or eating too much food before bed.
        Avoid alcohol at night.

There are probably much more things you could do and change, but since I’m not a doctor and don’t know what is your health issue I can’t give you much advice.

Anyway I wish you all the best and I hope you get to normal sleep at night soon.

    • Wow ! what a yummy and delicious in just two days my body was very healthy and lively. I was always feeling some pains and tired every part of my body but after taking little sip of the drink I feel so lively back to my healthy body .Love it

  • Hello Jen,
Thanks for the articles, do you mean that before every consumption of the juice it should be heated ? And what quantity should be taken each time. Thanks

    • Hi Nicholas, it’s not necessary to heat the juice before you drink it. Actually you should cool it after the drink is ready and store in the fridge as I wrote in the article. Of course you can reheat the drink if you prefer and use it along(mixed) with a hot tea when you need a little warming or are treating a cold or sore throat.

Normally the lemon ginger drink is consumed when it is cooled down and you can easily make a cold(iced) tea or a similar refreshing drink for the summer as shown in the pictures above. The drink is quite versatile and healthy, so how you consume it will mostly depend on your preference and the purpose you are using it.

Regarding how much to drink, well as with anything don’t go overboard consuming liters of it(though I guess will not harm you). A dosage of one cup to a few cups per day should be enough. If you dilute the drink and mix it with other fruit juice or tea you can probably drink 0.500 ml to a Liter per day as a daily refreshing drink. Just make sure you don’t have any serious health issues or other problems related to ginger or lemon and garlic, so in this case consult your doctor first.

  • I take warfarin at night , BUT, I have been making this drink for a few weeks, I wonder if I am doing any harm to my body , Because of the Warfarin

    • Hi Harriet, thanks for stopping by. I did a little research and it seems lemon and lemon juice used in normal daily dosages should not be a problem. Ginger could have some interactions with warfarin, but can be consumed in moderation. Here is a quote from https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/16182-warfarin-a-blood-thinning-drug-what-you-need-to-know-

Herbal supplements. The following herbal supplements may affect the INR, causing it to be too high or too low. Certain foods like celery, clove, garlic, ginger, and parsley are usually safe if they are used in small amounts in cooking or as a seasoning (these are marked by an asterisk [*].) They should not be used in the form of a supplement.

Garlic also can have negative side effects and is apparently in the list of foods to avoid if you take warfarin as stated here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/deep-vein-thrombosis/in-depth/warfarin-side-effects/art-20047592

It can really depend on the severity of your health issue and many other things and it’s necessary that you consult with your doctor first before consuming such foods especially if they are spicy and with a strong effects like ginger and garlic.

I guess drinking some lemon juice in small amounts should be safe, but use your good judgement and follow your doctor recommendations and advice.

Wishing you all the best and happy Easter holidays!

    • I am a physician and just happen to read your concern about the interaction of warfarin with the drink and actually garlic most common side effect is bleeding. I would not recommend taking it while you are on warfarin.

  • Hi,thank you very much for educating us,my question is
Can a high blood pressure patient drink lemon garlic ginger mixture and also take the medicine given by the doctor?

    • Hi Hislord, I’m not really able to give you an advice about your health condition as I’m not a doctor, sorry. Please communicate closely and consult your physician or pharmacist.

In general the ginger lemon garlic drink is a healthy beverage you can easily make at home, that’s why it’s so convenient and preferred by people looking to strengthen their immune system naturally and improve their overall health.

It is not intended to cure serious diseases or health conditions. The drink may help or may not and for some health conditions and medications the ingredients could be contraindicated and should be avoided as noted in my previous comment above.

So, please consult your doctor if you have a high blood pressure and are not sure whether you can use the lemon ginger drink.

    • Please read my previous comment where I answered your other question. For a healthy person a dosage of one cup to a few cups per day should be enough.

      • When I make this at home I usually drink between one and a few cups per day, which should be enough to give you some health boost and strengthen your immunity. It’s a nice daily drink, but you shouldn’t drink too much as it contains spicy, strong ingredients like garlic and ginger. In case you have any health issues, please consult your doctor first.

  • Since I started this mixer of Garlic, Ginger and Lemon, my performance and my sex libido improved a lot, is what I noticed, and my appetite is very high….I feel energetic everyday…

    • It’s a common effect for a lot of people who drink this healthy mixture and actually such effects are the reason many look after this drink. The main purpose is to improve or maintain your health and strengthen your immunity, especially in the current situation. Of course positive effects and health improvement is not guaranteed, but I’m really happy it works great for you. Hopefully others will find the recipe beneficial too.

      Stay safe and healthy!

  • Are the nutrients in the garlic and ginger not destroyed in the course of boiling for 25 to 20 minutes? Why if after blending , I drink without boiling? Will it still work?

    • Good question. There are many debates on this topic and many argue on whether cooking, boiling food( vegetables and fruits) decreases nutrients.

For this recipe I choose to make it by boiling for 20 or so minutes (the time could be shorter, but not less than 10 minutes), because this way the harsh compounds in ginger and garlic are somehow softened and will not irritate the stomach in people with sensitive tummy like me. Raw garlic and ginger are too strong for my stomach and I often feel discomfort if I use them raw. So, I cook them for a short time and then add the lemon after that. You can add the fresh lemon juice without boiling after the ginger and garlic water cools down and then drink the mixture.

If you have a strong stomach you can use the raw ginger and garlic juice fresh. It will probably have a stronger effect, but is not suitable for people with health issues or sensitive, weak digestion.

The nutrients in some foods are partially destroyed, for other foods vitamins and minerals are just dissolved in the boiling water and some type of foods even increase their nutrition profile as beneficial compounds are created or activated by the heat. • You can drink the mixture without boiling by just extracting the juice with a blender or juicer, nothing wrong with that. Given you don’t have any serious health issues. Though, I don’t really recommend it as raw ginger and garlic can be too strong in both taste and effects on the body. Please see my previous reply to your other question for further info.

      Cheers.

    • Only using the drink won’t probably help you for that. Maybe you should improve your diet, lifestyle and have enough physical activity and you will probably see better results and will feel/look better :-).

      Cheers.

  • Mixture of garlic, ginger and lemon is really a great medicine for me. I really like it for it gives me impetus and energy.

    • You can use as much as you like. I personally like honey quite a lot, so I add at least a few tablespoons in the mix or until I feel it’s pleasantly sweet before I drink it.

  • I have been using this concoction for a while now along with exercise. It makes me active. However I notice recently that my heart rate increases when I take it. Any connection?

    • I’m sorry Charles, but I am not a doctor and can’t really recommend anything in this regard. Please consult with your physician, who should be able to better help you with your situation.

      Stay healthy!

    • Keep it up Ann, and make sure you have enough physical activity or exercise, so you burn that unneeded calories away ;-).

    • Hi Alice, I drink this every now and then, but can’t say whether it will help you lose belly fat or not. The ingredients are certainly healthy and could give your body some benefits. Though, I wouldn’t rely solely on the drink to lose weight. You should combine enough physical activity like: workout, exercise, jogging,(even walking would help), etc.. with a healthy diet and I sure you will see positive results soon.

      Cheers.

  • Hi 👋 I have put more garlic and ginger, think not enough with 2 Ltrs of water. Any negative comment? I hope, it’s ok. My husband and myself we drink half a glass in the morning before we eat or drink anything. I hope we are doing right, we started this routine since March 2020. And we are ok so far. Please advise and thank you

    • Maria,

you can always adjust the recipe according to your needs or preference. What’s important here is not necessarily using the exact ingredients and measures, but being happy with the drink and enjoying its healthy benefits. I’m really glad it works for you and your husband and you should be Ok if you add some more garlic and ginger. If you like it, go for it. It’s all natural ingredients, so no worries, just make sure to not go overboard with the drink.

  • I find that I get constipated with this concoction, which I find very strange. In fact both Imy husband and I are experiencing the same problem. Its been a month, and have been drinking half a cup in the morning and at night.

    • Hi Val, in general the drink mixture should actually have a slight laxative effect, but different people will have different reactions. So, if you think the drink may be the cause for your constipation you can stop drinking it for awhile to see if you have any improvement. Also, you shouldn’t drink too much of it, but you say you drink one cup a day, so you should be good.

The cause for your bowler movement issues may not be the drink itself, and the reason could be many other things, like: unhealthy food, wrong lifestyle, stress, poor diet, not drinking enough water(or other drinks), etc,..So, take a moment and think what could be wrong in your daily diet or lifestyle that could possibly be causing your constipation. And of course it’s best to consult with your doctor and/or dietitian to advise you on a proper diet or daily regimen. I wish you to get back to normal soon. Cheers.
