shamrock shake recipe

McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes are a classic treat around St. Patrick’s day. We’ve turned this delicious spearmint smoothie into a SKINNY Shamrock Shake recipe, so you can get all the flavor but with fewer calories! In addition, we gave it a touch of mint and chocolate for even more fun!

So, It’s that time of year again! The Shamrock Shake is BACK! Have you ever enjoyed a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake? I sure have until I found out what was in those things. Just how bad can it be? Here are the basic nutritional facts for a 12 oz Shamrock Shake.

That’s a whole lotta calories and sugar for a drink that’s only 12 oz. But what else is lurking behind all those calories? It’s filled with chemical ingredients, additives, and potentially dangerous food dyes. Do you really want those things in your body? So whats a girl gotta do to get her shamrock shake fix? Make her own healthier version of course!

It’s funny, I never really crave one of these green colored drinks until it gets close to St Patty’s day, and I see them advertised on TV. The power of suggestion I guess, but then I cant get the thought of them out of my head. So instead of giving in and buying one of those chemical filled versions, I make my own. It takes under five minutes to make, uses natural ingredients to get that beautiful green hue, and has no refined sugar at all. With healthy ingredients like spinach, bananas and Coconut Sugar., it’s a treat I can indulge in whenever the mood strikes me without feeling guilty.

Wait a minute, spinach in a smoothie? I promise you can’t taste the spinach at all, and it gives a healthy dose of Vitamin A and fiber, as well as that pretty green color to the shake.

Shamrock Shake Recipe

Everyone loves McDonald’s shamrock shakes around St. Patrick’s day, but with this lean shamrock Shake recipe you can make it at home any time of the year!

I have a weakness for everything related to ice cream. It’s always the perfect time for ice cream, whether it’s snow on the ground (SNOW ICE CREAM!) Or 100 degrees outside. Not a seasonal dessert in this house!

One of my favorite moments for ice cream is when McDonald’s releases its Shamrock Shake for St. Patrick’s day! I love drinking these things, but all those calories? No thanks! Make this homemade Shamrock Shake recipe instead. It tastes just as good (maybe better?) And it’s much better for you. A skinny and low-calorie shake that you can drink without guilt!

I made this chocolate and mint smoothie, so it’s a little different. But, it still has that spearmint flavor, and it never hurts to add a little chocolate, right? You can easily adapt this recipe to keep the original flavor if you don’t want mint chocolate. Anyway, this is a delicious lean smoothie that everyone will love.

Why wait until March to have a shamrock shake? Prepare this homemade Shamrock lean smoothie recipe at any time of the year!

McDonald’s Shamrock Shake contains about 460 calories for small size, 560 calories for medium size and 800 calories for large size. In addition to a lot of sugar.

Fortunately, there is a way to enjoy this spearmint smoothie with a little less guilt. This slim recipe contains less than 300 calories per serving(when prepared with low-fat frozen yogurt; the recipe card shows with plain frozen yogurt).

So you can get all the flavor without all the calories! It’s a victory. Drink it anytime for a dessert that doesn’t break the calorie bank!

When is Shamrock Shake available?

If you opt for the fast food version, the Shamrock Shake is available around St. Patrick’s day, so you can only get it for part of March. But why wait a short period of time each year to be able to make this favorite at home, at any time of the year? One of the many reasons to prepare this homemade Shamrock Shake recipe!

What does a shamrock shake contain?

This lean Shamrock Shake has slightly different ingredients from the McDonald’s version, both to make it healthier / less caloric and to taste better (in my opinion)! Yes, better than the original if you ask me. I like the mint and chocolate flavor added in my recipe, but you can stick to vanilla mint if you like.

The original version is essentially soft vanilla ice cream, a syrup premixed to add color and flavor, then topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

Our homemade Shamrock smoothie is made of:

  • Low-fat, mint chocolate frozen yogurt (you can use vanilla instead if you want the more traditional flavor)
  • Almond milk
  • Dark chocolate chips (optional, leave them aside for the original vanilla and mint flavor)
  • Peppermint extract
  • Green natural coloring (you can use matcha, moringa powder or spirulina too)

Of course, there are many options for ingredients. Choose the one you like:

  • Low fat smoothie cream
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Chocolate curls or chips
  • Fresh mint leaf
  • Mint cream syrup

I love the mint and chocolate milkshake version, but again, feel free to stick to the original flavor if you want the closest match to a Shamrock McDonald shake.
How to make a Shamrock smoothie at home

Making Shamrock Shakes at home is a breeze, and it’s the only way to satisfy your cravings for this mint shake when it’s not available at McDonald’s.

How to make a Shamrock shake smoothie:

Mix frozen yogurt, almond milk, chocolate chips, peppermint extract and food coloring in a blender.
Mix to the desired consistency. If desired, slightly thicken or add more almond milk to lose weight.
Do not forget to cover it with whipped cream and a cherry, in addition to any other ingredients you want.

You can replace vanilla yogurt with mint chocolate flavor and leave the classic vanilla mint smoothie chocolate chips.

Enjoy!
